Publishing & Generative AI Music

Works are protected by copyright, and that protection depends on human creativity. As generative AI becomes increasingly present in the creative process, it raises important questions for the publishing ecosystem.

The global publishing system is built around human authorship. Collective Management Organisations (CMOs) require works to have identifiable human creators in order to be registered and monetised. For this reason, Works that are generated substantially or entirely by AI cannot be represented or registered within the CMOs.

At Believe Music Publishing/Sentric, we truly support the responsible use of technology as part of the creative process, but the Works we represent must originate from human songwriters and comply with the legal and regulatory frameworks that underpin the global publishing ecosystem.

As AI technologies evolve, new opportunities may emerge. Any such opportunities would only be considered where they align with our core principles of Consent, Control, Compensation and Transparency, and where songwriters have the choice to participate.

This approach reflects our responsibility to protect the long-term value of songwriting and publishing rights, while ensuring innovation develops in a way that genuinely respects creative ownership.
